Zero Waste Laundry Detergent

Earlier this year, I adopted a zero waste lifestyle.  The biggest challenge in living zero waste is learning how to make all these package-free, zero waste alternatives.  One of the first products that I ran out of and started to make myself is laundry detergent.  It was surprisingly easy, and I love how I can customize the scent of this laundry detergent to my own liking.

This laundry detergent is perfect for HE washers, and it leaves your clothes so clean, soft, and smelling fresh!

– 1 cup baking soda
– 2 cups washing soda
– 1 bar Castile soap (I used Dr. Bronner Rose soap, but you can use any that you want)

I repurposed an old pasta jar and an OxiClean scooper.  You can use any airtight container you want.  I choose an airtight container to keep all the nice rosy scent in.  But your laundry detergent won’t clump if you don’t store it in an airtight container.

1. Using a cheese grater, grate the Castile soap.
2. Using a food processor, combine the grated Castile soap, baking soda, and washing soda until a fine powder forms.

Ta-da!  That’s it!  You’ve made laundry detergent!  Just use 1-2 tbs per load depending on soil level.
